My name is Maki. Under this identity I produce work of my own internal culture.
When I see folk art and the local traditions of Indigenous cultures throughout the world and in Japan, I feel the pure joy of expression through creating and decorating. Festivals, garments and tools reflect this joy of creating.
These forms of expression are the history and the wisdom of their culture. Some have vibrant and almost aggressive colours but at the same time blend with nature.
In the contemporary world of consumerism and mass production, efficiency is what makes the gears turn. Decorations are removed and inefficient processes are dropped. 
We remain with simple, uninform, and streamlined products, but lose diversity, character and personality.
I want to resist against this urge to be efficient. Creating and decorating is necessary to life.
I use clay to create because its materiality has the ability to tap into my primitive instincts. It allows me to create honestly to my identity and culture.

わたしの名前、マキと言う名の架空の民族。自分の精神の表現。
私は土着的なものから純粋な「創造と装飾」を感じる。
世界各地の祭りや民族衣装、様々な道具、それらはそれぞれに美しく、部族に備わる精神が表現されている。 色とりどりで激しいのに自然で、彼らの歴史と叡智そのものだ。
現代は大量生産、合理主義で、大きな歯車で物事が進んで行く。 異物は取り残され、無駄は削ぎ落とされ、その結果として私たちが手にするものは、画一的でシンプルになるが、それは多様性や人間くささを排除していく。
私はそれに抵抗したい。
「創造と装飾」とは生きるパワーだ。
プリミティブな感覚が引き出される土という素材を用いて、
私のアイデンテティに基づき表現している。
